Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.
This week’s topic is:
Characters Whose Job I Wish I Had
Oh boy, so apparently I read stressful books, because I had a really hard time finding books with characters who’s jobs I’d like to have. In fact, in many cases I would most certainly not want the stress involved in a lot of these character’s work-lives. I am not cut out to be an assassin, I’m not great with blood so vampire (is that a job? Like professional vampire?) is clearly out. The main character of my favourite series is a mechanic, which I could not handle even for a day. In the end, I managed to track down 5 books with characters who’s jobs I feel like I would enjoy.

Job: Princess
Character: Mia Thermopolis from The Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot: I’m just going to say it, I could totally be a princess of a tiny country like Genovia, with some proper training. I’m sure it would be stressful, but I think it could be manageable. I feel like I might have a bit of a leg-up on Mia, being older and having slightly more leadership training under my belt. I of course would rely on some well-trained advisors for the really important matters, but I could definitely pull off a tiara.

Job: Chef
Character: Hassan Haji from The Hundred Foot Journey by Richard C. Morais: In another life, I would love to be a chef. I know it’s a lot more involved than just cooking, but I think it could be quite fun to be a chef in a small town, working with my family to run the restaurant. Just keep me away from the finances, I’m terrible with math.

Job: Chocolate Shop owner and chocolatier
Character: Vianne from Chocolat by Joanne Harris: Cooking and baking with chocolate all day in a small French town? Sign me up! Bonus points if I can also be mysterious and vaguely witch-like like Vianne while doing it!

Job: Cave-dwelling witch (This is totally a job)
Character: Angrboda from The Witch’s Heart by Genevieve Gornichec: I am more than okay living in a cave in the middle of nowhere doing my witchy business. It’s a comfortable life, I make a decent living by trading potions, and I have plenty of time to spend with my kids. Sure, I have some enemies, but who doesn’t nowadays?

Job: Kennel Maid
Character: Lissla Lissar from Deerskin by Robin McKinley: I think working with dogs full time could be fulfilling for me. I love dogs, they are happy and love unconditionally, so they would make the perfect coworkers. While a kennel might be a pretty smelly place, I could spin this as an almost doggy-daycare kind of situation, which sounds like fun!
I feel like my list came straight from a 7-year-old child’s ‘What I want to be when I grow up’ school assignment. These are the 5 characters who’s jobs I wish that I could have! Do any of these jobs sound good to you? Let me know in the comments!
Being a cave-dwelling witch sounds awesome.

Great post!! I’d most likely be terrible at it, but I like the idea of being a princess and I’m interested by a book about a chef. I like your take on the ttt – I was pretty stuck but in the end I went for a quiz on jobs from fantasy books. See how many you get! https://hundredsandthousandsofbooks.blog/2021/03/02/ttt-guess-the-fantasy-jobs-but-they-get-more-and-more-obscure/
Princess please.
